Mueller Basically Just Told Us The Ball Is In Congress' Court

By: Kayla Pasacreta

After a 2-year-Russia Investigation and post-media firestorm, special counsel Robert Mueller made his first public remarks Wednesday morning. While Mueller kept his mild demeanor, he made a few eye-opening statements that forces us to try to read between the lines.

If we had the confidence the President did not [clearly] commit a crime, we would have said so.
— Robert Mueller

What is Mueller saying here? Early into his remarks, Mueller made it clear that it is unconstitutional to charge a sitting President with a crime. Therefore, Mueller cited regulation that prevented his special counsel from being able to consider charging the President with a crime.

Is this exoneration? No. What we basically heard Mueller say: we did not clear Trump on any crimes. However, we also weren’t able to charge him with anything, either. He emphasized that it is important the 463-page report “speak for itself”.

He ended his remarks with restating the fact that Russia did interfere in the 2016 election,

I will close by reiterating the central allegation of our indictments, that there were multiple, systematic efforts to interfere in our election. And that allegation deserves the attention of every American.
— Robert Mueller

Congress, the ball is in your court now.
