Alabama Basically Completely Banned Abortion

Alabama Basically Completely Banned Abortion

By: Dana Phillips

Here is a snapshot at the recent  abortion bill passed in Alabama:

The bill was sponsored by Rep. Terry Collins (R), and titled The “Human Life Protection Act,”
1. It defines abortion as “the use or prescription of any instrument, medicine, drug, or any other substance or device with the intent to terminate the pregnancy of a woman.”
2. It bans abortion in the state of Alabama with the exception of if the woman's life is in jeopardy.
3. 22 senators voted against the inclusion of an exception for rape or incest in the bill
4. Any doctor caught performing an abortion will be charged with a class A felony up to 99 years in prison. That's more time in prison then the charge of rape.
5. It is the most restrictive abortion law in the nation, and 25 of 31 senators who voted to pass the bill were all white men.

When piecing together who is in support for this bill it's clear a lot Americans still believe that these procedures are dated back to medieval times. This bill’s intention is to overturn Roe vs. Wade, which already proved quite simply that abortion is a constitutional right.

The idea that these rights are being taken away isn't just alarming; it leaves millions of women across the nation feeling helpless and in fear of their lives. If this is about being pro-life, then what about rape victims, young girls, those not physically, mentally or emotionally ready who are going to be forced to have children. If Alabama wants to protect life, how are they doing that outside of the womb?  If it's for Human Life Protection why aren't we talking about who this bill is leaving out?

What happens now? Who answers when women no longer have the right to answer to their own bodies. Abortion is a deeply personal decision that should be made by women, not the government. Making it out to be a tragic choice is only enabling those who believe they have moral regards to force women to have children. Don't move forward after this bill without speaking up, this is an attack on women's rights and silence won't save us.
