Former San Franscisco 49ers quarterback-turned-activist Colin Kaepernick has been selected of the face of the 30th anniversary for Nike's 'Just Do It' Campaign. Kaepernick is well-known for the starting the wave of national anthem protests in August 2016 to draw attention to the issue of police brutality and other forms of social injustice. Kaepernick notably explained kneeling during "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,"

Per Yahoo Sports, the deal is a "wide endorsement" where Kaepernick will have a star contract featuring merchandise for his brand, "The contract is a "wide endorsement" where Kaepernick will have his own branded line including shoes, shirts, jerseys and more. According to Robinson, Kaepernick signed a "star" contract that puts him level with a "top-end NFL player" worth millions per year plus royalties."

Making Kaepernick the face of such a prolific campaign shows the company isn't afraid to raise the stakes and take sides in such a controversial debate that has shaken the entire country. Unsurpringisly, Nike's decision has some people calling on a boycott of the company.

On August 28th, an arbitrator dismissed the NFL's request to dismiss Kaepernick's grievance amongst owners to keep him out of the league as a form of punishment for his protests' advocating for social justice. Kap's case will now officially go to trial.
