Former GOP Strategist Calls It Quits With Republican Party In Scathing Twitter Thread

Prominent GOP strategist Steve Schmidt is officially calling it quits with the Republican Party. Schmidt was a member of the party for over twenty-nine years, most notably serving as chief adviser to John McCain during the 2008 election. In a Wednesday morning Twitter thread, Schmidt expressed disappointment with the “immoral and indecent” Republican Party that he now sees as the “party of Trump”.
In his Wednesday morning tweets, Schmidt called the party corrupt, and particularly cited the new zero tolerance” immigration policies enacted by the Department of Homeland Security and Attorney General Jeff Sessions that separate immigrant families at the border.
Since the 2016 election, Schmidt has long operated as an outspoken critic of Trump, encouraging voters to support Democrats in midterm elections. In closing Schmidt tweeted, “This Independent voter will be aligned with the only party left in America that stands for what is right and decent and remains fidelitous to our Republic, objective truth, the rule of law and our Allies. That party is the Democratic Party.”
Schmidt joins the growing number of Conservatives disavowing Trump and the complicity of the Republican Party. Just earlier this month, former Speaker John Boehner expressed disappointment in the Republican Party, “There is no Republican Party. There’s a Trump party. The Republican Party is kinda taking a nap somewhere,” Boehner stated.
