This Monday evening, President Donald Trump formally, and strongly, endorsed Roy Moore, Alabama Senate candidate. Moore tweeted his thanks to Trump for backing him.

Moore's chances of getting to the Senate seat seemed doomed on November 9th, 2017, when Leigh Corfman told the Washington Post Moore sexually pursued her when she was 14, and he was 35. Corfman's allegations led to a flood of allegations from other women who too said Moore pursued them, and even forced himself on them sexually, when they were teenagers and he was in his early 30s. The Republican National Committee (RNC) initially suspended funding efforts for Moore following the allegations, but have now completely reinstated their fiscal support for Moore following Donald Trump's endorsement. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell initially called for Moore to "step aside" from the race, but now says the decision about Moore in the Senate should be up to the people of Alabama.

Trump's endorsement to Moore does not come as a shock. Just last week, White House spokeswoman Kellyane Conway refused to disavow Moore and simply stated, "We want the votes for the tax bill." Still, some Republicans like Mitt Romney are refusing to get behind Moore.

The reaction to Moore's allegations are very similar to the temporary that backlash that then-presidential candidate Trump faced following the leakage of an Access Hollywood tape in which he appeared to brag about sexual assault, saying he grabs women "by the p***y". Many Republicans initially withdrew support only to end up embracing him again once the election drew closer.

Alabama's special election for Jeff Sessions' vacant Senate seat will take place next Tuesday, December 12th.
