Trump Is Headed To The Hill To Make Nice With Republican Senators

Today, Trump is headed to Capitol Hill to begin talks with Republican senators to urge them to help pass his ideal tax reform. This might be tricky, as Trump as had a very publicly-rocky relationship with Republican senators. After repeatedly failing to collectively agree on the best replacement for Obamacare, attempts to repeal Obama's key legislation has continued to fall through the cracks. And, a very frustrated Trump has not been silent about his disappointment. When sh**t hits the fan, he typically blames Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell or even Senate mavericks like John McCain.

With a narrow 52-50 majority in the Senate, Republicans can only afford to lose three votes of their own. Senator Orrin Hatch, Senate Finance Committee Chairman, said, "We’re certainly looking for the president to put the full force and power into helping put through a good tax reform bill,” If the bill passes through the Senate, Trump will then have to urge House Republicans to pass the resolution. Most Democrats see the tax reform as a tax break for the wealthiest people in the country, but Republicans also hope to sell it as a victory for the middle class.

Today's conversation may be awkward af, given Trump's recent quarrels with Arizona senator John McCain and Tennessee senator Bob Corker. ICYMI, John McCain slyly threw shade at Trump over the weekend, with his comment about rich people conveniently  dodging the draft (cough cough). With some more direct shots, Republican Senator Bob Corker hit the news circuit this morning to call Trump's visit "nothing but a photo-op," and scolded Trump to, "leave it (tax reform) to the professionals." Corker went even harder on Trump, vowing not to support him in 2020. When asked if Trump is a good role model for kids, he replied, "No...absolutely not." He went on to say Trump still has not risen to the occasion as President.

Corker has been a recent consistent critique of Trump, and intensified their beef when he called the White House "an adult day-care". Ever since, their beef as escalated.  Unsurprisingly, Trump immediately fired back at Corker today on Twitter.

This tweets are surely not the best sign of wavering unity for the Republican Party. Stay tuned on the next episode of Keeping Up With The GOP to see if the party is able to unite to pass tax reform.
