1. New Jersey's Governor Race

New Jersey's governor race to replace the infamous Chris Christie is between Democratic candidate, Phil Murphy and Republican candidate, Kim Guadagno. This election is important because the New Jersey governor is one of the most powerful in the country, he/she appoints the entire State Cabinet, prosecutors, judges, and a host of other commission officials. Phil Murphy, a former Goldman Sachs executive, former US ambassador to Germany, and big Democratic donor, is the front runner of the election. Murphy has promised check the Trump administration and appoint an attorney general who will fight the White House over immigration policy which attracted voters attention. Kim Guadagno has been serving under Chris Christie as lieutenant governor for eight years and is looking to move up to the top seat but Guadagno has had trouble gaining stable support due to her strong connection to Christie and support for Trump. Will Republican backlash turn the governor seat back blue? We will soon find out.
2. Virginia's Governor Race

Virginia's governor race is between Democrat Ralph Northam, the current lieutenant governor and Republican Ed Gillespie, former Republican National Committee chairman. Virginia is a key state to watch because it is historically a lean state and the only Southern state Trump lost in the Presidential election. The race has been tight between the two candidates for the past month from the polls ranging from Gillespie having a six point lead, the candidates being tied, and now the latest poll slightly favors Northam to win with a slight 3 point lead. Republicans have won only one of the four last governor elections since 2001 which is why Republican national groups and donors have poured money and resources in Gillespie's campaign in hopes of a victory. Trump has also tweeted in support of Gillespie and Vice President Mike Pence has appeared on his campaign trial. Northam has also drawn support from major Democratic leaders and appeared on his campaign trial with Barack Obama and Joe Biden. This election is important because the next Virginian governor will have a key say during redistricting, which is when the state redraws its congressional and legislative boundaries which have a large impact on future elections. Currently, the Republicans have control over both chambers in the General Assembly and a Republican governor would give them full control over the redistricting which would be detrimental to the Democrats. This race is essentially a toss up and one to watch because the parties will use this election as a predictor for the outcome of the upcoming 2018 midterm elections and if Trump's impact has pushed Virginia more to the left. Both parties all pulling all of the stops in hopes for this win, so this election will surely be one to watch.
