Late Monday evening, President Trump announced his Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, age 53. This comes only weeks after Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement. This nomination will leave the supreme court 5-4 in the Republicans favor. Although former SCOTUS Kennedy was a republican he was a respected swing vote, often voting in favor of progressive ideals such as gay marriage.

The White House is pushing for Kavanaugh to be confirmed by the Senate before midterm elections in November, as of now they are saying they will have a vote before October 1st. Democrats on the other hand are having no problem taking the long route to the vote, come November, they are hoping to take the majority. In this case, they can vote against Kavanaugh pushing for a more progressive nominee to take the seat.

Let’s take a closer look at Kavanaugh:

● Worked with Kenneth Starr on the investigation that lead to Bill Clinton’s Impeachment

• He later stated that presidents should not deal with civil/criminal litigation while holding office rather dealing with it once they have left office

● Nominated to the federal appeals court by George W. Bush in 2003

○ He wast no confirmed until 2006 due to skepticism of his experience

● It is unclear how the nominee will vote on abortion, as Roe vs. Wade being overturned is a discussion

○ He did make a statement "If confirmed to the DC Circuit, I would follow Roe v. Wade faithfully and fully. That would be binding precedent of the court. It has been decided by the Supreme Court." Reported by CNN.

Many took to twitter to express their opinions.  

Senator Elizabeth Warren stating in a series of tweets the importance of fighting to gain the majority in the senate.

“Brett Kavanaugh's record as a judge and lawyer is clear: hostile to health care for millions, opposed to the CFPB & corporate accountability, thinks Presidents like Trump are above the law – and conservatives are confident that he would overturn Roe v. Wade. I'll be voting no.”

Kamala Harris urging young women to pay attention:

“If you are a young woman in America, pay attention to Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination. What’s at stake is a woman’s right to make her own decisions about her body and her future.This will forever change your life. Pay attention.”

Adding to the long lists of tweets is VP Pence, defending and praising Trump's nominee.

Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation by the Senate will take some time. Democrats will continue to work to fight back and take the majority while those in favor of Kavanaugh are pushing to get his confirmation before midterms. The Tea will continue to update the progress of Kavanaugh’s road to the Supreme Court.
