In a mega petty (but understandable) moment for American politics, Republican Senator John McCain is now saying he doesn't want Trump at his funeral, multiple sources close to the Arizona senator have confirmed to NBC News. Jake Tapper of CNN shared his thoughts on the moment, "This is a real moment for the country where an American hero, somebody who is beloved in many, many ways is saying, ‘I don’t want this guy at my funeral,'"
This is a pretty low blow for someone who isn't even dead yet, but highly reflective of McCain's views on (Y'all's) President. McCain, 81, is battling brain cancer, and has had a rather turbulent relationship with Donald Trump. The beef peaked in July 2015, when Trump declared, "I like people who weren't captured," referencing to McCain's time in a North Vietnamese prison where he was routinely tortured. Unsurprisingly, Trump's comment escalated the feud between the two.
The final moments of McCain's political career have been largely defined by his commitment to Conservative values, and disavowal of Trump-ism, which he has referred to as "half-baked, spurious nationalism”. According to NBC News,

In an audio excerpt from his new book "A Restless Wave", McCain states, "I don't know how much longer I'll be here," McCain has extremely reflective as of late, even stating it was a "mistake"to pick Sarah Palin as his running mate in 2008. McCain explained, "She stumbled in some interviews and had a few misjudgments in the glare of the ceaseless spotlight,” McCain also spoke more about his views on Trump, describing him as "a reality-show facsimile of toughness” and accusing him of failing "to distinguish the actions of our government from the crimes of despotic ones".
In recent days, McCain's family and friends have been joining him at his Arizona ranch to reflect. Joe Biden recently visited the ranch, and McCain urged him to "not give up on politics", referencing to Biden's pending 2020 presidential run. Former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush are reportedly set to be the eulogists at McCain's funeral.
